Undercover Sunday Salon
I've been finding it very difficult to post clandestinely; this is the time of year I never seem to have five minutes alone. So, this may be quite brief...
I was at Costco yesterday, glancing over the book tables, and I spotted a name I vaguely recognized...couldn't remember where I'd come across it, but my memory is a wonderful thing because I had successfully stored the title as a 'buy'. I didn't even take the time to read the blurb, just threw it in my cart and carried on (I have great faith in my memory). Well, I certainly wasn't mistaken ! This book is exactly my cup of tea.
I suspected I might have read a review on Debra's Book Blog, and sure enough, there it was. I don't think Debra loved it the way I do though. (Debra's probably too 'normal' to fully appreciate this book.) The story is written as narrative from an autistic person's point of view and it is quirky, creative, zany... Autism is a handicap, alright, but a peek into this mind is pure pleasure. The book is different from anything I've ever read before. I just love it!!

I enjoyed reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time quite a bit too. I was not so enamored with his second novel, A Spot of Bother, but I do like the author's writing. I am glad you found this little gem at Costco!

Anyway, I certainly liked the book a lot. It's been a long time, though. This book is stored in my brain in the same compartment with Steve Martin's The Pleasure of My Company, which was very charming.

Kimmy, do look for this one. It absolutely thrills me. I haven't enjoyed a book so much in ages.
I loved "The Pleasure of My Company" too, Debra, but much as I admire Steve Martin's work it didn't ring as 'true' as this one. I recall that the protagonist overcame a great many of his problems in Martin's book and waltzed off with a love-interest at the end. Of course, I haven't finished "The Curious Incident" yet, so perhaps the ending will be a disappointment...(seriously doubt that though, Kimmy)
I loved this book too, Susan! It was easily as good as all the hype. And someone I know in real life (Bob May) is a character! (Bob May is an eminent scientist and was the first or one of the first to realise that chaos isn't random but can be described mathematically. He was until recently president of the royal society and before that was the UK chief scientist. But when I knew him he was a working scientist who I commissioned to write articles for a journal I work for.It was quite a suprise to find his ideas described in this lovely book!
I have not read the new book myself yet, but Cathy my daughter has and she liked it.
So glad you found the clandestine moment, Susan, may there be many more of them.
